Sycamore Creek-Verde River Tributary COA

Sycamore Creek is a medium-priority management unit. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) has suggested a possible site on Sycamore Creek for fish barrier construction and repatriation of loach minnow, spikedace, and Gila topminnow to meet USBR conservation goals. In a 2013 trip report, USBR determined that in addition to the fish barrier, chemical renovation is needed to remove non-native species from the complex habitat. Although the fish barrier site would be outside a federal wilderness area, the renovation project would need to be helicopter-based, increasing costs significantly. USBR further noted how sparse fish and crayfish were in the stream despite suitably diverse habitats, possibly due to recent flooding, naturally low stream productivity, or winter mortality. Additional survey and inventory of Sycamore Creek is needed prior to making any substantial management decisions such as barrier construction and potential renovation. Such projects should be considered relative to other nearby sites such as Wet Bottom Creek
