Arizona Wildlife Conservation Strategy

House Rock Valley COA

House Rock Valley COA provides habitat for a wide array of wildlife species. Among these are an American bison conservation herd, refugia for northern leopard frogs, a diverse assemblage of bats, burrowing owls, year-round range for American pronghorn, important winter range for mule deer, and habitat for migrating shorebirds and waterfowl. Invasive plant species and climate change are primary threats to this area.

Conservation Goals

  • Manage habitats for a broad diversity of self-sustaining game and nongame species.
  • Manage area for recreational activities including hunting and wildlife viewing.
  • Improve collaborations with partners to better manage livestock grazing to reduce adverse effects to native habitats.

1.3: Livestock farming and ranching

3. Climate Change and Severe Weather

3.1: Habitat shifting and alteration

8. Invasive and Other Problematic Species

8.1: Invasive non-native species

9. Natural System Modifications

9.1: Fire and fire suppression

Potential Conservation Actions

2. Land and Water Management

2.1: Site/area management
  • Improve water conservation measures at three dirt tanks within House Rock Wildlife Area.
  • Improve wetland habitats at dirt tanks that serve as refuge sites for northern leopard frog on House Rock Wildlife Area.
  • Improve management and protections from livestock overgrazing.
2.2: Invasive/problematic species control
  • Restore areas affected by cheatgrass and other invasive rangeland plant species.

3. Species Management

3.1: Management of specific species of concern
  • Perform periodic genetic assessments and surveillance for disease to guide our management of our northern leopard frog populations.
  • Implement range monitoring and improvement projects to meet American bison herd goals.
