Arizona Wildlife Conservation Strategy

Pine Creek-Below Hwy 87 COA

Pine Creek - Below Hwy 87 is a medium-priority management unit with a management emphasis of increasing native aquatic species. This lower portion of Pine Creek contains a robust population of roundtail chub along with a mixed assemblage of native and non-native fish. In 1992 lowland leopard frogs were observed, but have not been seen in recent surveys. Crayfish are abundant. Managing for native species would likely require construction of a fish barrier to prevent upstream movement of undesired species from the East Verde River coupled with removal of non-native species. Some rainbow trout move down from upper reaches of Pine Creek, but do not represent a conflict with managing for native species. Additional surveys in the “The Narrows” section are needed prior to specifically defining active management.
