Arizona Wildlife Conservation Strategy

Phoenix Zoo (Salt River below Saguaro Lake) COA

The conservation ponds at Phoenix Zoo (Mandarin Pond, Arizona Trails Pupfish Pond, and the Ranarium Ponds) will continue to be managed for native aquatic species including Gila topminnow, desert pupfish, Chiricahua leopard frog, and California floater. Although the Zoo manages these populations, the Department is a partner in the conservation and periodically provides new individuals to augment the populations to maintain genetic variability. The Department will monitor the ponds at least every three years to assess the status of the population. The Department will continue to use the ponds as a source for translocations to establish populations elsewhere in Arizona.
