Fish Creek (Upper Black River) COA

Fish Creek was a former Apache trout recovery stream that harbored a population protected by an artificial fish barrier, which was subsequently destroyed following flooding effects post-Wallow Fire in 2011. The primary management objective is to restore this section of Fish Creek as an Apache trout recovery stream with the construction of a replacement fish barrier to prevent continued invasion of non-native salmonids present in the Black River. Fish Creek was reopened to fishing in 2019 and contains wild populations of Apache trout hybrids, rainbow trout, and brown trout. The secondary management objective is for self-sustaining populations of native speckled dace, desert sucker, and Sonora sucker. Department habitat surveys have determined there is suitable habitat for loach minnow in much of Fish Creek.
