Arizona Wildlife Conservation Strategy

Ellison Creek COA

Active management in this high priority management unit has and will continue to emphasize native species, specifically Chiricahua leopard frogs in the Ellison Creek headwaters and Lewis Creek. In recent years, Chiricahua leopard frogs have been documented in all three creeks within designated Critical Habitat. The self-sustaining rainbow trout population receives little angler use and is compatible with the primary native species management emphasis. A large population of terrestrial gartersnakes in upper Ellison Creek is likely supported by the presence of trout. An introduction of narrow-headed gartersnakes might be considered in the future. Future introductions of other native fish species (e.g., loach minnow) may be considered.
