Arizona Wildlife Conservation Strategy

East Verde River-Ash Creek to Verde River COA

Access to this lowest and longest portion of the East Verde River is generally limited and difficult. The lowest approximately 19 miles of this stretch are within designated wilderness with no road access. Both native and non-native aquatic species are present. Management actions are largely infeasible because of the number and diversity of species present, size of the system, and difficult access. A diversity of native species have been documented within this reach, however most are present in low densities. This section of river is not stocked and is not planned for stocking of any of the warm-water sport fish that currently occupy it, but the fishery is anticipated to remain. This section of the East Verde River is proposed Critical Habitat for narrow-headed gartersnakes; however, actual records of the species in the East Verde River occur near the upstream extent of this unit with no records since the early 1990s.
