Dude Creek is identified as a Gila trout recovery stream in the species recovery plan and is therefore a high priority management unit. Gila trout were reintroduced following the Dude Fire but did not persist. Prior to 2015, habitat conditions were unstable within the watershed. These conditions discouraged further attempts to reintroduce any fish. Based on surveys conducted in 2015, the recommendation was made by the Gila Trout Recovery Team to stock Dude Creek with Gila trout. Plans consisted of stocking Gila trout for three consecutive years, and then assessing the population to determine successful establishment. If Gila trout become established, various native species (e.g., speckled dace, desert sucker, roundtail chub, loach minnow), may then be stocked in the stream. Springs located near the headwaters of Dude Creek may be considered for introductions of Chiricahua leopard frogs. Habitat improvement projects may eventually occur once the watershed stabilizes. Gila trout were stocked in the Dude Creek in October, 2015. Main Diamond and South Diamond lineage Gila trout were stocked, and supplementations were planned in 2017 and 2018.
