Arizona Wildlife Conservation Strategy

Boyce Thompson Arboretum (Upper Queen Creek) COA

Ayer Lake at Boyce Thompson Arboretum is managed for refugia populations of Gila topminnow and desert pupfish. When the park gives approval, the pond will be drawn down and treated with chemicals, if necessary, to eradicate non-native fish. After non-native fish eradication, desert pupfish and Gila topminnow will be returned to the pond. Roundtail chub will be stocked once the other two species establish. After stocking, the pond should be monitored annually to assess species status until it is determined that species are established. After that the pond should be monitored at least once every 3 years.
